Jewish Sports Review review

Posted on: September 26th, 2017 by Ron Kaplan

Image result for jewish sports reviewAs I mentioned in the previous entry, recently received the latest issue of JSR which includes:

  • College Football Previews (D-I, II, and III)
  • NFL Preview
  • Pro Hockey Review (2016-17)
  • College Soccer Reviews (men and women)
  • Sports Shorts
  • A recap of the 2017 Maccabiah Games
  • A list of women’s top performances in track& field

The Jewish Sports Review is a must for any true fan of, well, Jewish sports and is only available in print edition. I keep hoping that will change. Can you imagine an outlet that keeps track of these people and issues on a daily basis? If you look at an issue and see how many athletes that would include, you’d understand what a Samson-ish undertaking that would be. I tried to make Kaplan’s Korner that kind of source when I was working at the NJ Jewish News (did I mention it was named blog of the year by the New Jersey Press Association in 2015?), but since that was only a portion of my job description, it was impractical. These days it’s even more difficult, since I actually have to work for a living now.

For further information about JSR, call 310-838-6626 or send an e-mail to shel@jewishsportsreview.com.

Maccabiah report…or not

Posted on: July 12th, 2017 by Ron Kaplan

Unfortunately, I don’t have the time I used to to post everything about the Maccabiah Games, which began July 4, so I’m trying this — cutting and pasting from my Google alerts on the topic. Sorry, but that’s the best I can do right now and I hope it gives some insight as to the festivities. This is the most recent list. I’ll be working backwards until I catch up.

Carry on. And remember, if you want to learn more about the history of the event, with all due modesty, I literally wrote the book: The Jewish Olympics: The History of the Maccabiah Games.

Maccabiah mentions: An occasional look at who’s going to the Games

Posted on: June 2nd, 2017 by Ron Kaplan

An occasional look at who will be participating in the upcoming 20th Maccabiah Games in Israel…

And a shameless self-promotion of my book, The Jewish Olympics: The History of the Maccabiah Games, which was published in 2015 and is “complete” through the 19th Games.

You’ll forgive me for not attributing the articles that came from college newspapers and websites; just too lazy. I also want to clear up something that might not be apparent to non-competitors: “Master” does not mean that someone has achieved a higher level of proficiency in a sport (although they certainly might); it basically means they’re above a certain age. That said, Mazel tov to all.

Kicking up their heels for Maccabiah

Posted on: January 5th, 2017 by Ron Kaplan

Hard to believe the 2017 Maccabiah is just a few months away. And because these are the 20th games, you know it’s going to be a major deal.

Fundraisers and tryouts are already under way. Here’s a piece about an octet of athletes from a dojo in New York that are already gearing up for the competitions.

Black belt members of the Warren Levi Martial Arts dojo in Cedarhurst. Levi is at far right.

For those looking to catch up with the story behind the quadrennial event, I humbly offer The Jewish Olympics: The History of the Maccabiah Games. Who knows, maybe I’ll be updating it after July.
